He was a figure in the visual art movement named POP ART. After his successful career as a commercial illustrator, he became a controversial artist. His works explore the relationship between artistic expression, celebrity culture and advertisement. 

During the 1960's he began to make paintings of iconic American products such as Campbell's Soup Cans and Coca-Cola bottles, as well as paintings of celebrities such as Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, Elizabeth Taylor and Brigitte Bardot.
